A Newspaper Report of the Sale

The description of the area of each plot may be obscure to modern readers. The area is described as typically

315a   0r  22p  : where: a = acres,  r = roods,   p = square rod, pole or perch.

30.25 square yards = 1 square rod, pole or perch
40 square rods, poles, or perches = 1 rood
4 roods         = 1 acre
640 acres     = 1 square mile
4840 square yards  = 1 acre
Prices are given in Pounds and shillings. There were 20 shillings to a pound so 10s or 10/- = 50 new pence.
