Undated But the lands belonging to the Bishop of Coutances at Acton Ilger, Hambrook, Stoke Gifford, Doynton, Wapley, Earthcott, the Lea and Dodington were very likely forfeited at this time, when also it is more than likely that the old church at Westbury-on-Trym was plundered by the sea-robbers.

An incomplete hidage schedule of the Worcester Church lands in Gloucestershire only, antedating Domesday.
The text of this document is incomplete: the entry for Bishops Cleeve (Worcester A3) lacks the details of its internal composition, and there are no entries for Great Colesbourne (3,2) and Condicote (3,6). It must, however, antedate Domesday, since in 1086 (see GLS 3,1) and later (a) Aust was certainly subinfeudated out of Westbury-on-Trym; (b) Stoke Gifford (see 3,1 Westbury note) was claimed as a subinfeudation from Westbury;

1314 Milicent, daughter of Maurice (III) Lord Berkeley (d. 1326) and sister of Thomas (III) Lord Berkeley (d. 1361) and of Maurice de Berkeley of Stoke Gifford (d. 1347), was married about 1314 to John Mautravers the younger (d. 1364).

1321 John Mautravers the younger (d. 1364). John's career was a spectacular one. [GEC viii. 580-6.] He took part with the Berkeleys in the Despenser war of 1321-2 and forfeited his lands in 1322 as a result, fleeing abroad. He returned with Isabella and Mortimer in 1326 and quickly became a major supporter of the new regime, being appointed one of the keepers of Edward II at Berkeley Castle with his brother-in-law Thomas Lord Berkeley. In 1329, for these and other services, he was granted the inheritance which the last Giffard of Brimpsfield had forfeited in 1322, and was summoned to parliament in 1330. He then became involved in the earl of Kent's so-called conspiracy and had to flee abroad again in the summer of 1330. In the following November Edward III staged his dramatic coup at Nottingham Castle, and one of his first independent acts was to pursue the matter of his father's death. As a result, Mautravers had to stay abroad for the next twenty years.

1322 SC 8/150/7482 AP King and council. Occupation: Bishop of Worcester Nature of request: Thomas Cobham , Bishop of Worcester states that John Giffard, who held the manor of Stoke Gifford of him as of the right of his church, and several other tenants who held of him, have forfeited their lands and tenements in war against the King, so that these lands and tenements are now in the King's hand. He asks that the services and customs due to him from the said manor might be given to him, so that he does not lose and that his church is not disinherited. Nature of endorsement: Date derivation: CFR 1319-27 p.97 is dated 18 February 1322, and CCR 1318-23 p.426 is dated 5 March 1322. If the manor was restored, this petition would seem to date from around February 1322, but, if, as the petition seems to suggest, the manor was held by John Giffard and not his mother, it might be later, but before 1327.

Nature of request: Filton, who holds the manor of Stoke Harry in the franchise of the barton of Bristol of Umfraville, requests remedy because the King's ministers came and wished to seize the franchise and distrain the tenants of Stoke Harry for amercements for breach of assize when the barton should only be amerced at the King's court of the manor of Harry Stoke. Nature of endorsement: The King's bailiffs should be ordered to allow Filton to have the view or leet of his tenants and assizes of bread and ale as he and his ancestors are accustomed. 1471 SC 8/344/E1296 AP Humphrey Forster, esq.; Sybil Forster, wife of Humphrey Forster, and widow of Robert Poyntz, esquire. Forster; Forster Humphrey; Sybil Prince. The Forsters show that they were for a long time seised of an estate in fee in Stoke Gifford, otherwise called Date range: 1471 - 1483. Note Alice Stonor married (as his 1st wife) Humphrey Forster, Esq. (1420-1488), of Harpsden by Henley, Oxfordshire, a lawyer. He was Knight of the Shire for Oxfordshire in 1467-1468, and ?1470-1471, Sheriff of Gloucestershire, 1472-1473, and Sheriff of Oxfordshire and Berkshire, 1474-1475.. A rather full biography of Humphrey Forster is found in Wedgwood, House of Parliament, 1 (1936): 344-345. Alice Stonor and her husband, Humphrey Forster, Esq., had a son and heir, Humphrey Forster, who was allegedly aged 30 or more in 1488 (but Wedgwood wisely observes that the younger Humphrey was more than likely aged 40 or more at that date). They were also the parents of Jane Forster, wife of John Greville (living 1499), of Drayton, Oxfordshire, which couple is ancestral to several New World immigrants, including Audrey Barlow, Elizabeth Bosvile, and George, Giles, and Robert Brent.
